Mosel Valley

Germany's Rhein valley (reviewed here) is world-renowned for its vineyards, castles, forests, quaint towns, and tranquil atmosphere.  The Mosel valley- also in Germany- could be identically described.  Less popular and accessible, the Mosel sites are nevertheless equally charming, and perhaps a bit more peaceful.

Trier

An ancient Roman town, Trier was once "one of the five biggest cities in the known world" (source here).  Its sites include the Porta Nigra (Roman gate), ancient cathedral, gothic church, Roman ampitheather and Roman baths.  It can be easily enjoyed in a day.

Burgsreich Cochem

Cochem is a lovely town with magnificent castle.  Well worth a visit.

Burg Eltz

Popular travel writer Rick Steves loves Burg Eltz, and the site has subsequently enjoyed far greater exposure (and presumably popularity) as a result.  Wonderfully situated, the interior is far too cramped for decent shots, so enjoy the external views below.  Note the Medieval "combination weapon" in the final picture (an 'axe-gun').

Burg Thurant

I never visited Thurant, but just driving by is a treat.

Koblenz

Strategically located at the confluence of the Mosel and Rhein, Koblenz is an okay town for visiting.  Across the river, Festung Ehrenbreitstein is an imposing fortress offering magnificent views of the city.

Conclusion

The Mosel River valley is worth your time, even if it's a bit off the beaten track of standard tourist sites.
