"This is a book about the heart of Christ. Who is he? Who is he really? What is most natural to him? What ignites within him most immediately as he moves toward sinners and sufferers? What flows out most freely, most instinctively? Who is he?" So begins Dane Ortlund in his masterful Gentle and Lowly.
Ortlund looks at Christ's heart through the Scriptures and wisdom of those who have come before and illuminated the Word. He points out that "we project onto Jesus our skewed instincts about how the world works," which "is why we need a Bible. Our natural intuition can only give us a God like us." And so Ortlund goes through the Scriptures and makes plain the true heart of Jesus. And what comfort that brings.
Powerful. Profound. Refreshing. Healing. Convicting. Consistently Quotable (my highlighter got a workout). I could continue with superlatives, but that covers the essence. This book is getting a lot of kudos in Christian circles, and rightly so. As one reviewer and a friend noted, this book is a balm for the soul- especially the guilty, weary, or empty one. Highly recommended.
