Concluding the original X-men trilogy, X-men 3: The Last Stand sees the underlying theme of the movies- human/mutant relations- come to a head. In X2 (review here), humans tried to kill all mutants. That goal is gone. Now, human scientists have discovered a 'cure' to the mutant gene, and are offering it voluntarily to all mutants. Magneto and his brotherhood don't take kindly to the gesture- in their eyes, mutation is not an illness to be cured. They will fight to prevent the cure's distribution, and they have a new ally on their side- a mutant of unparalleled power. Standing in their way is, as usual, Professor X and his band of mutants, who believe they can coexist with humans without destroying or becoming one of them. Who will prevail?
This film did well at the box office but was widely criticized, primarily because it killed off several key characters and 'unmutated' several others (through the aforementioned mutant cure). For that reason, some claim this is no longer part of the X-men movie canon (source here), and subsequent movies (X-men: First Class and Days of Future Past) have scenes that do indeed contradict events presented here. I for one, appreciated that they took several leaps through deaths/etc. . . . though they did paint themselves into a corner for subsequent films. Those concerns aside, this movie was much in keeping with the prior two in flavor, time (rushed plot/character development), and CG. In other words: an okay first-generation superhero flick.
