Orphaned at birth, Oliver Twist is subject to a variety of injustices and misfortunes as he struggles through life- until one day, help arrives from an unexpected quarter. Happy in his new life, Oliver remains menaced by the old . . . and evildoers are never far away, seeking the young one. Has the orphan any chance?
I love Charles Dickens, and this work was typical of the man. The first part was hard to read, not because it lacked in quality, but because young Oliver's plight was so heart-breaking to follow. The desire to read improved in conjunction with Oliver's circumstances, and in the end, I couldn't put it down. It does suffer from unlikely coincidences, and is not quite up to some other Dickens- most notably, David Copperfield- but it is good.
