Star Wars: The Imperial Perspective (Empire Volume 3)

It's Sunday, so it's time for another Star Wars graphic novel.  Today: the third trade paperback in the Empire comic series.

The Imperial Perspective collects issues 13,14, and 16-19 of the Empire series, and contains four stories:

1) What Sin Loyalty? (Story: A, Art: A)
Told from the Imperial point of view.  Commander Akobi and his loyal bodyguard, stormtrooper TK-622, are reassigned from fighting the Rebels on Ralltiir to the Emperor's new battle station: the dreaded Death Star.   On-board, Akobi is subject to multiple assassination attempts, which TK-622 eventually traces to a Rebel saboteur on-board.  He and the Rebel have their final confrontation in a room with good view of a surprise Rebel attack on the battle station- one that will ultimately claim the lives of millions on-board.

2) The Savage Heart (Story: B, Art: B-)
After the Death Star explodes, Vader pilots his damaged TIE fighter to the nearest Imperial outpost, where he crash-lands some distance from the station.  As he journeys there on foot, he encounters a pack of savage animals- which mirror the savagery in his heart.

3) To the Last Man (Story: A-, Art: A-)
Imperial Lt. Janek Sunber shows that true leadership means sacrifice on Maridun, home of the Amanins, who have just destroyed an Imperial outpost.  Sunber shows his merit, receiving several field promotions, and saves a remnant of the Imperial force from the brutal natives.

4) Target: Vader (Story: C, Art: A)
Jib Kopatha is an Imperial informant whose information has recently become suspect.  Vader personally visits him in his hideout to "encourage" better performance the only way a Sith Lord can.  While there, Vader himself is subject to an assassination attempt by a band of Falleen, whose home planet was recently devastated by Imperial bio-weapon experiments.

Overall, this is a good collection- especially stories 1 and 3.  The other two were less impressive- the last especially so.

Rating: A-
