Bavaria Pt. 3 (Berchtesgaden region)

Bavaria's southern regions are among my most favorite in the world, principally because of the Alps.  Today's post looks at the extreme southeast of Bavaria (and Germany).

Berchtesgaden

We loved our trip to Berchtesgaden.  The town was charming, the surrounding mountains glorious, and the Bed & Breakfast where we stayed was sublime (and reminded me of Middle Earth).

Eagle's Nest

Hitler's mountain retreat presented as a gift for his 50th birthday (near the start of WWII), the allies couldn't pinpoint its location until late in the war.  What a view!

Königsee & St. Bartholomew's

Bold architecture set on a beautiful lake and surrounded by towering mountains, St. Bartholomew's is most easily accessed by boat, and well worth a visit.

Herrenchiemsee

King Ludwig II of Bavaria (sometimes called "screwy Louie" or "the fairy tale king") built Herrenchiemsee as a copy of Versailles in France- he greatly admired both it and the person who expended it, King Louis XIV.  My post on France (here) has some picture of Versailles- note the similarities?

Conclusion

The Berchtesgaden region is an amazing place to visit.  It's a tad cheaper than other Alpine retreats (especially Switzerland), and just as beautiful.  It's one of our favorites.
