Bavaria Pt. 4 (Garmisch region)

Just over 100 miles west of Berchtesgaden (the last region reviewed- here) lies Garmisch-Partenkirchen, another Alpine town surrounded by magnificence.

Garmisch

The town itself is beautiful, with quaint architecture encircled by amazing mountains.

Wank

This sounds naughty, but it's not in German.  The Wankbahn is one of many cable cars you can take to the top of local mountains.  After the ride, we'd spend hours at the top hiking along the peaks and enjoying the vistas before us.

Eckbauerbahn

Another cable car ride, well worth the price.

Partnach Gorge

Partnach Gorce- a narrow, fast-moving water flow- is a great place to visit.  After walking the length of the site, you can hike up a mountain, enjoy the view, and ride a small, user-operated cable car back down.  It was harrowing in places, but enjoyable.

Alpspitze

Another cable car, another day of amazing sights.

Zugspitze

The highest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze lies on the Germany-Austria border.  Ascent to the summit requires several cable cars, and (if memory serves) a cog train.  The weather at such altitudes changes without warning; we enjoyed 30 minutes of clear skies before fog set in.

Conclusion

Like Berchtesgaden, I could spend many happy years in the Garmisch region.
