Just northwest of Wiesbaden lies a small town called Eppstein. Its castle dominates this picturesque spot and is the ideal day trip for those in the Frankfurt area.
The hike up to the castle is steep but short, with some nice views of the town.
Once inside, it's a quick tour of the ruins.
Climb the tower (134 steps, but who's counting) for some great views. In the second picture below, you can see the tower from Burg Königstein (4.2 miles away) in the distance.
If it's open (hours vary), check out the museum for a few relics and interesting models of the castle's progression throughout the years (from 1300s-on; wikipedia has the history).
Once done inside, loop around to the northern face to check out the view and what used to be a moat.
The castle is easily accessed, quickly visited, and a great day trip. I recommend a summer visit to better enjoy the surroundings.
