Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

The original!!  Released in 1977, Star Wars: Episode IV captivated that first generation and many since.  Here, we're introduced to so many characters that became legends- Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO, and more as these Rebels battle against the Empire and their sinister agent of evil, Darth Vader.  When the Rebels obtain battle plans for the Empire's new space station (the Death Star), the Empire will stop at nothing to recover them- to include obliterating entire planets.  Can the Rebels discover a weakness- or has their time run out?

The only Star Wars movie that truly stands alone, A New Hope blew people away.  The effects for the time were incredible- and still hold up well.  The story was enthralling.  The worlds were exotic.  The people were a delightfully mixed lot- heroes, villains, pirates, wizards, smugglers, aliens, troopers, royalty, droids (with personality!).  The vehicles were exciting and imposing- fighters, huge capital ships, an unbelievable space station. The environment was unexpectedly run-down: people envisioned space and advanced technologies to be 'clean,' sterile environments, not the has-been, 'worn' look presented in the film.  It had action, suspense, humor, and presented a 'hero's journey' in an entirely new light.  In short, it was a space opera that provided something for everyone, and its success took the world by storm, made George Lucas a billionaire [eventually], Harrison Ford a household name, and created a pop culture force that exists just as strongly- if not more so- today as it did almost 40 years ago.
