Burg Runkel

Runkel Castle is a nice fortification in an picturesque setting on the Lahn River.  It has quite the history.   If you get to visit, I recommend starting by crossing the bridge and enjoying the view from the far bank.  Even on a dreary day, the view is spectacular.

After that, make your way up to the castle along the narrow streets of Runkel.  Enjoy the half-timbered homes as you approach.

Pass through the outer and inner gates to a pleasant courtyard.

Then duck inside a few rooms, one of which shows how the castle looked in Medieval times.  Most of this area is closed, however, as it remains a private residence.

Next up is another courtyard, and more interior exhibits.  Check out the weapons!

The next part was my favorite.  Go through the door marked "to the ruins," which gives you access to select parts of the old, ruined fortification.  After great views of the courtyard, you head into a barren, desolate section.  Great for exploration; keep an eye on the kids, as you're allowed to go up to the top and enjoy the wonderful views of town, bridge, and river.

All told, I'd rate Runkel Castle as a quiet gem.  Near Limburg, it's not as heavily touristed as other areas near Frankfurt, and a wonderful day out.  Also, it has reasonably priced medieval weapons in the gift store.
