Carmilla (Sheridan Le Fanu)

I first read Carmilla six years ago, as it's part of the In a Glass Darkly compilation.  It's a vampire story- foundational in the genre, as it influenced Stoker- and very well done.  In it, a noble family agrees to take in a mysterious girl while her mother attends a critical errand.  This strange visitor is secretive of her past, locks her door at night, and doesn't come down until late in the morning (or afternoon).  When villagers start dying, nobody expects Carmilla . . . but should they?

I listened to the pictured dramatization; it was really good, though parts were very hard to hear (in the car, anyway).  It's October- monster story time- and it doesn't get any better than Victorian Gothic fiction.  Check this one out.
