Luxembourg: Mullerthal

We saw Vianden Castle on our first day in Luxembourg, but our second day featured my real draw to the region: the woods.  For whatever reason, the Mullerthal region of the Luxembourg is my favorite woods in the world.  The tranquility of the region, plus the delightful paths by/through/between the rocks, is a lovely day out.

We started the day by parking at the Heringer Millen tourist center.  A helpful guide gave tips on hikes suitable for kids, and our first stop was just 0.9km away: the Schiessentümpel, or Devil's Bridge.  We hiked to it, then took a slightly longer route (1.5km?) back to the car.

After lunch in Berdorf, we headed to Hohllay Cave, accessible by a parking lot just south of the town.  These man-made caves have been used since Medieval times to make millstones, through the tedious process of carving out rock and letting water do its thing.  The caves themselves were neat, but the surrounding area was also wonderful.  Parts reminded me of a cross between Partnach Gorge and Puzzle Wood.  It felt . . . ancient.  That whole hike was 1.5km, tops.  Very doable, even for kids, and a lot of fun.

We ended the day with my favorite hike of all: we parked at Predigtstuhl and hiked in the immediate surrounds.  The rocks . . . the rocks!  I loved the trails through them.  So much fun, appropriate for kids, and so beautiful.  We probably did only 1km, wandering through the mazes and getting delightfully lost.  I understand there's a similar region in nearby Consdorf.

After those three hikes, though short, the kids were zonked.  We headed to Bourscheid Castle- but that post comes later.
