It just feels natural to read ghost stories in October. Scottish Ghosts is a compilation of 34 such tales by nine known Scottish authors (and seven anonymous). The nine known contain names that are familiar to some: John Buchan, S.R.Crockett, James Hogg, Andrew Lang, George MacDonald, Robert Marshall, Margaret Oliphant, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson.
I love ghost stories . . . but I'm generally disappointed by them. I read 8 tales across several authors, and decided to stop. I enjoyed the prose of Buchan, Scott, and Stevenson, but the tales in general either didn't have enough to keep me interested or concluded in a most unsatisfactory, open-ended manner.
